Looking out for co-workers
Wristband Number: 779777
Chris was the Lead Tech (Tech IV) at Melton Hill Hydro Plant with contract carpenters working down in the Draft Tube removing scaffolding. At lunch the carpenters were joking around about how bad the ammonia-like smell was down there and he decided he’d better check it out. He found the smell strong as well, so he decided to stop work and engaged management. The gas monitor used to certify the space did not detect ammonia, so the plant manager arranged to get an ammonia monitor from a nearby coal plant. The NH 3 level was well below the exposure limit, but was detectable, so a plan was put in place to ventilate the space before resuming work. Chris’ proactive engagement could have avoided negative health consequences and demonstrated TVA’s Four Vital Safety Behaviors.
